5 Essential Tips To Ensure Your Jewellery Lasts A Lifetime

As an independent metalsmith & jewellery designer handcrafting jewellery out of my Sydney studio I aim to design jewellery that lasts a lifetime. To help you keep your seaside treasures gleaming as bright as the first day you wore them, I've gathered five essential tips for ensuring your jewellery lasts a lifetime.

Whether you're an ocean enthusiast or just someone who appreciates fine, ocean-inspired jewellery, these guidelines will help you preserve your cherished adornments' beauty and durability.

1. Pick ocean-safe jewellery

One way to keep your precious jewellery pieces in excellent condition is to select ocean-safe jewellery in the first place. At Angela Wozniak Jewellery, I only use Ocean-safe metals durable enough to withstand the rigours of saltwater, making them ideal for beach lovers. My collections incorporate high-quality materials such as 14K Gold-Filled and Sterling Silver. These metals are hardy and resistant to tarnishing, bringing a layer of assurance, allowing you to enjoy your beach days without worrying about the effects of salty corrosion.

2. Immediate cleaning after your ocean swim

No matter the type of jewellery you choose, regular cleaning is critical. To preserve the longevity of your jewellery rinse immediately after being in the ocean to remove any salt build up and then wipe it gently with a soft cloth after every wear. This helps remove any oils or residue that may have accumulated at water alone can not remove.

For deep cleaning, use mild soapy water and a soft brush, followed by a thorough rinse and dry. Remember to be gentle; the delicate gems and pearls that lend your piece its unique charm deserve gentle care.

Regular cleaning not only preserves the physical integrity of your jewellery but also maintains its brilliant shine, keeping it as captivating as the day you first laid eyes on it. It can also help identify any potential issues early, ensuring your piece always remains in its best condition. It's a small ritual that can make a world of difference.

3. Proper jewellery storage

When you're not wearing your favourite piece of ocean-safe jewellery, it's important to store it correctly. Keep each piece in a separate, soft pouch to prevent scratches. It’s also important to store your jewellery in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes from the oxygen in the air so ensure those pieces are put into a zip lock plastic baggy to stop it going back (oxidising) which prevents discolouration and damage over time.

4. Keep away from  harsh chemicals

While ocean-safe jewellery is designed to be durable and long-lasting, it's still a good idea to limit its exposure to harsh chemicals. This includes household cleaning products, chlorinated swimming pool water, and even certain types of cosmetics or perfumes. Harsh chemicals can often cause unexpected reactions to your jewellery, leading to tarnishing or discolouration.

Whenever possible, put your jewellery on after you've finished applying cosmetics, lotions and potions, and avoid wearing it while cleaning.

5. Repair and maintenance

Finally, always keep an eye out for signs of wear and tear. If you notice loose settings or weakened clasps, don't delay in having them repaired. You can always reach out to Angela if something needs a repair.

It's better to fix small issues before they become major problems. With regular maintenance, your favourite pieces of ocean-themed jewellery can truly last a lifetime. The more care you invest in your pieces, the longer they will remain vibrant.

Embrace these guidelines and let your oceanic treasures accompany you on every adventure always shining bright!
